I overheard this conversation between Wife and Little Miss this evening after bathtime:
Wife: Are you going to wear undies at Carinya (child care centre) tomorrow?
Little Miss:
Yeah. Kimmy will help me (Kimmy is one of the carers)
Wife: Would you like to start wearing undies at
home on the weekend?
Little Miss: No
Wife: But you’re a big girl now
and you know how to use the toilet
Little Miss: When nanny comes.
Wife (to me as she entered the kitchen): HURRY
UP NANNY!!!!! I am sick to death of changing more toddler nappies
than baby ones!!
This is one thing mistake we have learned with the eldest that we won’t repeat with Usurper - Toilet training should be done when they first show and interest and not put off until it is convenient for the parents.
I will admit to being proud though that my daughter has started to negotiate about various things - takes after me on that front

Micah, now 3+, decided he wanted to be off the diapers because it was itchy. So that went quite easily: just had to deal with some accidents for a period of time and now only occasionally when he is too absorb in play and forgets to go to the bathroom.
Max, not yet 2, imitates sitting on the potty but won’t do anything else.
Negotiating: Micah does that all the time, especially near bed time.
Mommy: reading, brush teeth then milk (and water to rinse) then sleep.
Micah: No, reading, then milk then sleep, then brush teeth.
Mommy: How to brush when you are already asleep?… blah..blah..
When I ask my daughter if she wants to go pee pee on the potty she says, “No, I’m fine.” I too, can’t wait to ditch the diapers!
I do find it amazing how even 2 year olds negotiate in quite sophisticated ways and try and out smart us.
Never fear though because nanny is coming to stay with us for a few days from Tuesday - so it will be time to really have a crack a toilet training when there is an extra set of hands around!
