We are in that strange twilight toilet training period where the toddler hasn’t quite got the hang of it and therefore never makes it to the potty on time. Of course what Little Miss has become pretty good at is announcing that she has ‘had an accident’ but it is Ok because Elmo says everyone has accidents (at least he does on the Sesame Street website in the toilet training bit that our toddler is now obsessed with).
So we are spending our days cleaning up little puddles and constantly changing cloths. The good bit is that at least we haven’t had to clean up any poos just yet.
This isn’t because Little Miss has mastered the concept of doing that in a potty or something, oh no, it is because the minute she thinks she has to do one she starts crying and getting hysterical screaming for a nappy. Now that is a lot of fun!
So not wanting to push her, and to be honest not having the energy at the moment to enter into the battle, we decided that she could go back to wearing nappies full time and we could try again in a couple of weeks.
Of course, as I said earlier we are in the twilight zone now so Little Miss WON’T wear a nappy, but she won’t use the potty either. Which means that when it is nap time and she puts one on without a struggle she is awake 20 mins later because she can’t hold on any longer. Of course this is repeated at nights as well.
So I am currently going stark raving mad trapped between potties and nappies and actually getting nowhere. Of course all this is happening with a federal election 12 days away meaning I am clocking in 20 hour days to get through all the work that needs to be done, while still squeezing in some time with the kids.
Only 12 more sleeps though, and then I can respond to all my emails (sorry I have been slack), read everyone elses blog (actually I have been reading, just not commenting - again apologies) and getting to know our baby Usurper once and for all. I can’t wait, and hopefully by then nappies will be a thing of the past as well as long days and a certain type of politician…….

Oh the Elmo website, we have the Elmo potty DVD. I wish it were as easy as them saying “all done,” dropping the diapers and going potty…they say it takes at least a year…a year? I don’t know how much patience I have…LOL.
Potty training girls. I’ve been there. It’s more of a power struggle than anything. Good luck. For your sake I hope she decides to be potty trained soon. Our Firstborn was not fully potty trained until one night she said “How about I go pee pee on the potty and wear panties.” Sounded good to us. She kept her side of the bargain. Sanity returned.
Bastet - a year? That can’t be right can it. Please Lord, not a year - noooooooo!
Amy - thanks for giving me hope that there is light at the end of your tunnel. Also I enjoyed your blog, expect me to be a regular once life returns to normal in the next couple of weeks.
I don’t want to make you feel bad, but I have a post about how Caitlin OH SO QUICKLY got toilet trained!
Will you still be my friend?
Toilet training twilight zone is a nightmare! But… that means she’s getting close and soon the nappies and puddles will be history. Hang in there!!
We take Max’s diapers off in the afternoons when we are home and he will always announce when an accident has happened and even takes a rag and puts it over the puddle. But he refuses to go on the potty too, except on times he PRETENDS he has to go and sit on it for a moment and stands up and says “Done” but nothing’s there.
Just an update on the toilet training embargo. Little Miss is still refusing all efforts to be toilet trained - she has even proven immune to bribes of little treats or stickers if she was to use or even sit on her potty in her nappy when she goes.
She has however taken to some days demanding to be in big girl undies and not a nappy or a pull up. That is until she feels she has to go and then she demands a nappy back.
I have suggested to Wife that we tell her she can’t use the potty and has to use nappies as knowing our toddler that would pretty much guarantee she would demand to use it!
