I have spent the last few months training our toddler in the finer points in one of the most important things in life - how to support your football team (I am referring of course to Australian Rules football, or AFL but the general principles remain the same). Or more specifically in my case, the mighty Collingwood Magpies.
Just to give you an idea about the seriousness of this matter both our kids have been members of this fine upstanding institution since they were born - literally. Within 6 hours of both their births they had been joined up - it would of been sooner but we had to fill in the naming paperwork and then I had to find an internet connection. Also I went to a game the day after our youngest returned from the hospital after being born - I figured that she would be there every day for the next few years whereas the Magpies only play one game in Sydney a year.
Anyway this is a big weekend in the supporting stakes. Our team is playing the league leaders in the game of the round. If we win this one we are guaranteed a spot in the finals and the double chance, lose it and it may be a bit of a struggle.
So my plan for victory this afternoon involves dressing my toddler in black and white from head to toe. Teaching her to wave her Magpies flag, and wear a giant inflatable ‘we’re #1′ finger on her other hand the whole time screaming “GO PIES!!” as if she understood what it meant.
With this type of enthusiasm from such an innocent young child no just God could ever break her heart by denying her team victory - or at least I hope not
